Round off Decimals

Round Off Decimals: Rounding off a number means we are approximating that number. To round off the decimals we should know the position at which we are supposed to round off then we will follow the step given below :

  • If that digit is less than 5, do not change the rounding digit but drop all digits to the right of it.

Illustration 1:.   Round off this decimal   8.24536  to three decimal digits.

    Answer.  8.24536approximately8.245

To round off to three decimal digits, we must look at the digit in the fourth place.  The digit in the fourth place is 3 (less than 5).  Therefore, we will drop all the digits to the right.

  • If that digit is greater than or equal to five, add one to the rounding digit and drop all digits to the right of it.

  • Illustration 2:   Round off this decimal  8.24536  to two decimal digits.

    Answer.  8.24536approximately8.25

To round off to two decimal digits, we must look at the digit in the third place.  The digit in the third place is 5 (greater than equal  to 5).  Therefore, we will drop all the digits to the right
